A Little About Mr. Smith
Hi, I'm Mr. Smith and this is my 8th year of teaching. I grew up, went to school, and started my teaching career in Volusia County Florida (just east of Orlando). I completed my Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education (K-6) at the University of Central Florida. I also hold two endorsements from the state of Florida in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and Gifted Education. I moved to Seattle in June of 2015 and am now a certified elementary school teacher in the state of Washington, with a specialty in Gifted Education and English Language Learners on my teaching certificate.
My family has been involved in education for many years, as my father was a high school teacher and my mother is a high school data secretary. I attended elementary, middle, and high school all in Volusia County. During high school I taught in the on-campus preschool for three years. After graduating high school I went on to college and substitute taught for 3 years. Since graduating from UCF I have taught second, third, fourth, and fifth grade in my time as a teacher. I have also taught two years of self contained gifted classes at the 5th grade level. This will be my second year teaching a 4/5 split grade class. I won the FUTURES First Year Teacher Award at my school my first year of teaching in Volusia County.
In my personal life I love to read on a daily basis. I read books ranging from science fiction to educational theory. My husband and I do not have any children, however we do have a fur-child named Leo. He is a seven year old Jack Russell Terrier who thinks he is a person and is probably the funniest dog I have ever met! I also love to go out to dinner with my friends and family, visit theme parks, explore the city, and am an avid movie goer. I travel when I can and have been to some great places, including New York City, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Alaska, and the Bahamas. I still love watching cartoons and playing video games which I think helps me relate to my students and understand their interests. My friends and family would probably describe me as funny, sarcastic, strong willed, determined, and extremely organized.
My goal for my classroom is to make sure that every student gets the best education that can be provided to them. Not only will they learn the core five subjects (reading, writing, math, science, and social studies) but it is my hope that my students will come away with some life skills they will be able to apply outside of the classroom. I love to have my students work on interpersonal skills, organizational skills, as well as logical and creative thinking skills.
I hope that students will enjoy my class, and I am sure there will be many memorable moments by the end of the school year. Students should be prepared to work hard, put forth their best effort, and be challenged daily.
Thanks for taking the time to get to know a little bit about me!
Sincerely,
Mr. Smith
